Full Name:

European Cooperation in Science and Technology

Main Activities:

COST (European Cooperation in Science and Technology) is a pan-European intergovernmental organisation allowing researchers, engineers and scholars to jointly develop their ideas and initiatives across all scientific disciplines. It does so by funding science and technology networks called COST Actions, which give impetus to research, careers and innovation.

COST Actions help coordinate nationally funded research activities throughout Europe. COST ensures that less research-intensive countries gain better access to European knowledge hubs, which also allows for their integration in the European Research Area.

By promoting multi- and interdisciplinary, original approaches and topics, addressing societal questions, COST enables breakthrough scientific and technological developments leading to new concepts and products. It thereby contributes to strengthening Europe’s research and innovation capacities.

COST is implemented through the COST Association, an international not-for-profit association under Belgian law, whose members are the COST Member Countries.

Main Activities:

Photonics21 is the European Technology Platform (ETP) for photonics, a technology encompassing all of the products and processes around the emission, manipulation and detection of light. Photonics is integral to a wide range of industries that include the medical, healthcare, transport, manufacturing, and telecommunications sectors.

“Photonics21” was set up in December 2005 to bring the community of photonics researchers and industries together. The European Commission defined photonics as one of six European Key Enabling Technologies (KET’s) in September 2009. Shortly after, the European Research & Innovation Program “Horizon 2020” invited Photonics21 to become a “Public Private Partnership” (PPP). The “Photonics 21 Association”, a legal entity under Belgium law, became the private contract partner in November 2013 in a Public Private Partnership (PPP) in conjunction with the EU Commission.

Today Photonics21 represents more than 3000 personal members from across Europe and abroad. Our members are experts in the photonics industry, research organisations and universities who actively engage with us to develop a joint photonics strategy for future research and innovation in Europe.

With the global photonics market growing from €350 Billion in 2011 to €447 Billion in 2015, Photonics remains a strong industry. The European photonics industry, estimated to be worth €70 billion, has considerable global leadership positions and employs over 300,000 people directly.

With positive growth forecast, current industry trends like digitalisation, resource efficiency, individual and zero failure production will drive the photonics industry further.

Mauritskade 63

The United Academics Foundation

Main Activities:

– Did you know that a large part of publicly funded research is trapped behind a paywall?

– That the cost to read a scientific journal can reach up to €20,000 a year?

– And that most research data financed with government money isn’t publicly available at all?

In short, we don’t have full access to knowledge we already pay for. If access is available, we are often required to pay again.

The mission of the United Academics Foundation (UAF) is to connect science and society: creating a world where scientific research results are accessible for all, so that knowledge can easily spread and be built upon.

Supporting Open Access

In the current scientific publishing system, the gatekeepers limit access to research by charging high membership fees to individuals, companies, research centers and libraries. Furthermore, authors lose copyrights, re-use of articles is restricted and the publication process is inexorably slow. Fortunately, times are changing. Open Access publishing is supported and even demanded by more and more academics. Several legislators worldwide have already committed to implementing an Open Access-only policy. The question is no longer ‘if’ we should have Open Access. The question is about ‘how’ we should develop it and promote it further.
